Nature's Little Jewels
Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
The tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds can generate more excitement
than any other bird.
They arrive in Minnesota in May and leave by the end of
September.
Only about 3 inches long, a hummingbird weighs between six and eight
grams.
Its back is iridescent green with a white breast and belly.
They can fly up to 60 miles per hour and their wings can beat up to 75
times per second.
A hummingbird's egg is half the size of a jelly bean which is the
smallest egg in the bird world.
Feeding
Think flowers first! Create a habitat of flowers rich in
nectar
which will instinctively appeal to hummingbirds. Next,
put
your nectar
feeder near the flowers and be patient.
To make your own nectar mix 4 cups water with 1 cup cane sugar
and
boil for one to two minutes. Let the mixture cool. Fill
your
nectar feeder and store the rest of the mixture in the
refrigerator.Feeders
should be cleaned every 2-3 days. You can also buy the commercially
prepared nectar and it will last longer in your feeder than the
home
made brew.
Bees and Ants
To distract bees, apply Avon Skin So Soft around the feeding
ports
with a Q-Tip. To discourage ants, you can purchase an Ant
Trap and attach it to your feeder.
Landscaping
Planting flowers is the most important part of creating a
hummingbird
habitat. Here are just a few of the many choices:
