Identification
Overall length is 9". Has a white back and
under parts. Black wings with white spots. The face is
black
and white streaked. The males have the red on the nape while the
females lack the red. The bill is almost as long as the head and
the outer tail feathers are all white.
Food
Looks for wood boring insects. Attracted to
feeders offering suet, and sunflower seeds.
Habitat
Thrives in woods, farmland, and the suburbs where
snags can be found for nesting.
