Very Basic

  • Start your Macintosh by pressing the "POWER ON" key on the keyboard.
  • Shut Down your Macintosh by selecting "Shut Down" in the Special menu
(Alternate: Press "POWER ON" key and select "SHUT DOWN" or press return)
  • NOTE: On most Macs, do not turn off the Power Switch on the back of the computer!!!!!
(See automatic startup / shutdown at the end of this page)

  • Have you tried the "built-in" Macintosh Tutorial yet?
This is an excellent place to start with your new Macintosh - Use the Question Mark at the Right Side of the Menu Bar.

  • QUICK TIPS
Did you know that "Option-drag" a file creates a copy of that file?
"Option-Click" a window's close box closes all open windows.
    "Control-click" an item brings up a contextual menu.(OS8 +)
"Option-Command-Drag" an item creates an alias. (OS8 +)

Standard Macintosh Techniques:

  1. Point and Click:
Point with the mouse and "single-click" or "double-click" the mouse button is a common Macintosh technique.
  2. Drag and Drop:
Point with the mouse and hold the mouse button down while moving it is a common Macintosh technique. (Release the mouse button to "drop" the item.)
  3. Selecting:
Point with the mouse, hold down the mouse button, and drag over the top of an item is a common Macintosh technique. (An item is "selected" when it is colored. Release the mouse button to stop the process.)
  4. Wise Practice: for the desktop
When you are finished using an application, Quit the application do not just close the window of that application. (File Menu / Quit)
Many problems are caused by the incorrect practice of closing windows instead of quitting programs! Memory gets fragmented - "My computer is out of memory!" -, users wonder - "Why doesn't my computer work!" - (the program is already active and waiting for proper use!), etc.

Click once or twice

(general practice):
  • 1. Single-click any item in the Launcher (or in System 8 when the window has been set to "buttons") to start that item
  • 2. Double-click any item not in the Launcher to start that item

The Launcher

is located at the bottom of the screen and is used to initiate action.
  • 1. The Launcher has several categories
  • 2. Single-click any item in the Launcher to start it

Eudora

is used to read and send email.
"Email is courteous and specific! Deal with it at your own time - follow through on intentions!"
  • 1. In the Launcher / Internet / Eudora
  • 2. You must have an email address and Eudora must be configured to use your address. (Eudora usually is configured to for the "owner" of the computer but may have multiple users. If more than one person uses a computer, Eudora can be configured to be shared by several users.)
  • 3. With the Eudora (3.1.1), web sites in an email message become clickable (hyperlinks). Just double-click an underlined hyperlink.

Netscape (or Internet Explorer)

is used to browse and search the World Wide Web
  • 1. In the Launcher / Internet / Netscape
  • 2. Please do not use Netscape to send email. Use Eudora for email.
  • 3. Use the Bookmarks created for you and add your own (Bookmarks / Add Bookmark) (Netscape uses the term "Bookmarks" while Internet Explorer or America Online use the term "Favorites" for the same purpose.)
  • 4. Netscape 4+ is recommended. Use the latest version for accessing the more complicated web sites. (Netscape - 4.7.3 or Internet Explorer 5.0)

AppleWorks or Microsoft Word (98 or later)

are applications that are use to create word processor, data base, and spread sheet files.
  • 1. In the Launcher / Applications / AppleWorks
  • 2. It is your personal choice which program application you decide to use. AppleWorks (formerly called ClarisWorks) is best in the Mac environment but if you share files with Windows/PC computer users, you may want to use Microsoft Word (98 +). Microsoft Word cannot create database or spreadsheet. For that you will need other applications.

Printing

is generally accomplished on a printer attached to and configured for your computer.
  • 1. If you have more than one printer, select your printer in the Apple Menu / Chooser.
  • 2. Some printers may be networked (used by more than one computer).

Web Pages

can be installed on your computer if you have a full-time connection to the internet (Cable modem or DSL line).

  • 1. Help - Try this one out!!!! It really works!!!!
  • 2. Try this HELP system before any of the following HELP sites!

HELP

Send EMAIL requests for HELP to dthomas@pclink.com (David Thomas)

Special Note: Many Power Mac computers can be configured to start up every weekday at at a specified time. The same computers can also be configured to "shut down" at a specified time each day. If this appeals to you, ask about it and I can show you how.

Additional note: A computer not turned on is a "dead computer" and has no value. If you wish to have this expensive piece of equipment in your room or office, it is suggested that you "turn it on" every day the first thing in the morning!!!!

Good Habit: Get in the habit of checking your email the first thing in the day!!
