Sept. 9

We received an anonymous note from someone claiming to be the author of the "Mac OS 8.5 Tips and Tricks" Trojan Horse we described yesterday, and we've updated our special report, which covers several related topics.

We understand that large companies selling to mass markets make mistakes and drop some people "through the cracks." We also know that consistent abuse of customers will damage a business, so continuing reports from MacInTouch readers about Apple customer mistreatment have us concerned. They document horrible Apple Store experiences and absurd Apple Support experiences.

Larry Bles writes that one cannot buy the PowerBook DVD Video Kit that Steve Jobs touted in his Macworld keynote address:

"Apple has quietly discontinued it :( I'm not sure the thing ever shipped. The SKU has been deleted, and it cannot be ordered. I verified with the Apple Store yesterday that it is no longer an offered product. There are now only two ways to get DVD in the G3 Series PowerBooks.

  1. Buy the $5000 model that includes it
  2. Order the DVD Decoder card from Apple, and find a dealer that still has one of the DVD drive's available. Unfortunately, this method will cost you some $100-$200 more than the DVD Video Kit, which includes everything you need."

iMacInTouch notes the pending delivery of Imation's SuperDisk USB floppy drive for the iMac.

Insignia Solutions says it has started shipping SoftWindows 98 at a reduced price of $169, bundled with a copy of Windows 98. Upgrades and competitive upgrades are $130, and the company touts the emulator's high-performance networking and 3D "Voodoo" graphics support.

Apple's Henry S. Kim writes that Apple will discontinue its "Think Different" posters, but Mac advocates can still order them through the end of September. [The web page should be live later today.]

"The Apple 'Think different' Poster Series Collector Sets 1 and 2 will be discontinued soon. Due to licensing arrangements with the personalities depicted in the posters, these collector sets will not be reprinted or offered for sale again."

Insider Software's new FontAgent 2.7 replaces FontBox, the earlier version of the company's font synchronization, maintenance and repair utility. Several versions are available from $29 to $169.

Style Master is a Cascading Style Sheets editor, priced at $29. A demo version is available.

Andrew Johnstone's new Screenshot Central web site collects interesting desktop pictures.

Gabriel Sterritt writes about the secret trick for getting a Mac-compatible V.90 update for Hayes Accura 56K modems purchased in the last year (after an initial run-around from Hayes web site and a bad firmware download):

"To get the real v.90 update for Macs, you need to email customer.service@hayes.com with the number "5011" in the subject. You will receive an autoresponse message that includes the v.90 firmware update file."

Our Recent News and special reports also cover the following topics, among others:

  1. AutoStart worm [updated]
  2. new Trojan Horses and security issues
  3. QuickTime scripting and interactive software
  4. AppleShare problems [updated]
  5. G3 dim video
