Fetch - GeoCities Site

Placing a web page on the GeoCities Server (23 April 98)

NOTE from Dave Thomas:

GeoCities has it's own excellent system (as many other sites do) as an aid in generating a web page and working with your files on their server. I recommend that you try their system out by following their excellent instructions but I personally prefer to treat this server like all other servers (except AOL) and to create web pages in a standard way that works everywhere.

You will be able to create a web page with Adobe PageMill, or any other web page application, like BBEdit, and place it on GeoCities server just like any other server.

Fetch works just like all the other systems. I use Fetch to place a web page and to organize files on the GeoCities server.

Detailed Steps to access the server

  1. If you haven't done so, Download Fetch
  2. Open (Launch) Fetch
  3. Open the Bookmarks (Customize menu / New Bookmark) and enter the following:

    1. Name: GeoCities
    2. Type: Select Folder
    3. Host: ftp.geocities.com
    4. User ID: (enter your user name)
    5. Password: (enter your password)
    6. Directory: (Leave Last Line Blank)
    7. Click OK
    8. Go to File Menu and Save As...
    9. Select a convenient location and give it a name like My Fetch Bookmarks because this will be the bookmark file you will always use to start (Launch) Fetch and to access the server.

This is my Fetch Bookmarks File. I resize it and place it at the lower left of my monitor window.

    10. Go On Line (FreePPP connection)
    11. Double-click on Geo Cities in the My Fetch Bookmarks
    12. You will be taken to your directory where you see all the files you have on the GeoCities server. (You probably will see only one file called index.html the first time you access the server.)

    13. That is the way you access the server.

To Place Files on the server

  1. You put files on the server by clicking Put File... and
locating the file on your computer and
    clicking Open and
    clicking OK
    .

These are the windows you will see

    Important reminder:
Files must be sent correctly in order to work in a Web Browser. All .html files must be sent as text and all image files (.gif or .jpg) must be sent as Raw Data. Select the proper file type in the pull-down menu. The will not be necessary to do everytime if you set the file types in the Customize / Preferences / Upload area of Fetch.

  2. You can do other things with the files on the server (like delete them) by selecting a file and using the items in the Remote menu

Placing Images on the server

  1. One problem with GeoCities: You can't create a subdirectory with a "free account" so all the files will have to be in the same folder (directory). You will not be able to locate your .gif and .jpeg files in an images folder for use on this server.
