Eudora is set to check mail every 999 minutes if it is active (this large number is there so that it doesn't automatically check for mail when you are in the middle of something else).
Eudora will send mail when you click "Send" (Button

My computer starts up with a flashing question mark icon. What do I do?
Some of the 5260 computers with the IDE hard drives have demonstrated this problem (the flashing questionmark icon on startup). It usually only happens on a cold startup (when the computer has been off for a while - like overnight). Apple has recognized this as a problem and has promised some support for the computers that return the flashing question mark. I am trying to identify the Harding computers that have this problem. Thanks for the info.
Solution (temporary):
This usually works and the computer will start up Normally.
The temporary solution should work until I can get to the service of the computer. Please contact David Thomas if your computer has this problem. Let me know how it goes!!

Can I put all the Harding email addresses in my Eudora Address Book?
I have a "Nicknames" file of all the current Harding email address that can be used to "replace" the "Nicknames" file in your current Address Book. They cannot be just added to your list but will "replace" your current list.
If you request this file from me (email, telephone, pager, personal conversation) I will do the install on your computer (remotely from the lab).
You can also do the install yourself.
If you are informed that you cannot send email through Netscape or if you wish to change the configuration of your email in Netscape, use the following guide.
You can configure Netscape so you can respond to things from Netscape by doing this:

This is the message that I will sometimes get: "Memory is tight. You may need to close windows, clean up your in and out, and trash mailboxes, or increase memory size. Your current memory size is 529k; I suggest using at least 540k" Also other things are happening such as I'll lose have of the addresses that I save for email, my settings will switch for no reason in email. Any suggestions?
I am really interested in some more fonts for my computer. Are there any free fonts available on the Web?
Through no action of my own, I am writing this from my computer. Somehow I am back in business on the Web. No other problems this PM as I have tried a lot of actions. Still no Zip, but I'll keep trying. It just does not show up on the desktop.
Thanks for the messages this AM. I installed the newer (Zip) driver and it works just fine. I'm Zip-compliant again! I wanted to ask a couple of other questions: Do you have System 8.5 yet? Is it worth an upgrade? Do you have Norton Utilities 4.0 yet? I can't recall what your current thinking on a 56K modem is. I believe you said that you had been waiting for a certain model, gave up and bought another, and then the one you wanted came out. Thanks again.
I tried to retrieve my email yesterday and again tonight (Monday), and the message just begins to download, according to the status bar, and then stops. I waited for several minutes, thinking it was simply a long message, maybe one of those I started receiving when you were over on Saturday (which turned out to be baby pictures from a friend of ours)! When nothing further happened, I got frustrated and clicked various spots in the open window. I finally received this message: TCP/IP Error.-3162; The Server is not responding. {37:1297}. This, of course, means nothing to me... Do you have any suggestions?
I need to get to your computer to:

How Do I Configure Netscape To Send Email?
Netscape on the Harding computers is not configured to send email. You must send email from Eudora or POPmail/Lab to have your email work properly. (If someone clicks reply to your message, your "reply" goes to the "dead letter" account!) If sending email via Netscape, always include your regular email address in the body of your message and make sure you tell the person receiving your message that they cannot just click "reply" to send a message back to you!
The usual cause for this situation is that Eudora is "off line".
Causes:
Eudora may have been started one time with the "shift" key down which allows one
to compose mail before spending online time - or it may have been aborted from
completing it's cycle one time and it and it reverts to "off line".
Solution (usually no problem):
After launching Eudora (click on icon in the Launcher),
If it doesn't automatically launch the PPP connection to the ISP (Internet
Service Provider),
In the File menu select Check Mail (command m) and then
Click "..all sessions.." (or whatever the dialog is).
This should put things back "in order"!
General Assistance for Eudora:
The easiest help for any Apple program is in the "Help" menu. There is a complete
tutorial and set of helps for Eudora. Many people have never become aware of this
"online" manual for everything and many never use it. That is where I have learned
everything about Eudora. It is really a complete "online" help manual. If you want
to "do it yourself" that is the place to go.
Another source of information is the PDF manual. One needs to have Adobe Acrobat
Reader installed on the computer to read this type of document. It is located in
the Eudora Application Folder on your hard drive.
In your Internet folder,
Double-Click on Eudora Light Folder (or whatever I called it)
Double-Click on Documentation,
Double-Click on the Light Manual.pdf
If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, the help document will open
You may print the manual or read it on the screen (computer people
seldom print these things)
If you don't have Adobe Acrobat, I can get it for you or you can download it

Troubles, huh (of the common kind) - Memory (I mean computer memory not personal) - I
don't find it necessary to "live dangerously" anymore because of the following items
and because I have purchased and installed enough RAM memory for the way I use my
computer.
You have neglected to mention what kind of computer you have (Mac or PC) and what email
client (program you are using). I can only make some "generic" suggestions thusly (is
that a word?).
On a Mac, this situation usually has to do with two (or three) memory problems.
1- Program memory allocation (each application grabs a certain memory space when
launched)
_Click one time on the application icon for your email program
_Use command i (get info about the application)
_There will be three lines of memory allocation near the bottom of the window
_Set the middle number (minimum) to the value of the top number (suggested)
_Set the lower number (preferred) to a value that is approximately two times
the above (suggested).
_This should be standard procedure for making all programs work better (you may
have to purchase more RAM memory if this exceeds the usable RAM in your
computer).
2- Always QUIT (File menu/Quit) applications when finished with them - do not just
CLOSE WINDOWS - to release the RAM memory that is being used by that application
_Closing windows usually only makes it appear that the application is gone when
in reality it is still soaking up valuable RAM memory.
_Check the Application Selector Icon (upper right corner of the desktop window)
to see how many programs are still using valuable RAM memory.
3- A third one is a bit more subtle and it's result is "fragmented" memory.
_Open large longer-used applications first and not the transient ones.
_The computer CPU needs continuous memory segments to function. It will not
jump around and use fragments of memory wherever they are available.
_Common solution is to quit applications and RESTART the computer to allow the
computer to straighten things out.

Changing settings
If settings are constantly changing, I suspect a clock battery problem. The most
common setting that is noticed first is the computer clock (that's why this is
called the clock battery but it does much more). Other symptoms can be having to
return to the chooser to select a printer or eventually the monitor will not start
up.

I have never searched for (and thus have never found) font technology on the web. I
would suggest that you (or your friend) use the Web Crawler search engine on your
Netscape start up page. Just type in "fonts", click "search" and see what results
are returned. (I just tried it and find there are many interesting sites that offer
fonts - be careful- there are an awful lot of them.)
A word about "Fonts"
All the fonts that I use are "commercial" fonts and are only available in commercial
locations (usually on CDRoms). There are so many fonts available that one has to use
"restraint" when purchasing a "font library" and installing the fonts on your computer.
There is a limit of 128 fonts allowable in the "Fonts Folder". This limit can be
circumvented by placing associated fonts in suitcases and thus making the limit be 128
suitcases. Careful though - many fonts in the "Fonts Folder" slows down all the
applications!
I include only the fonts that I use regularly in my "Fonts Folder" (in System Folder)
and place the other fonts in a folder called "Fonts Removed" in the System Folder so I
can move them into the regular "Fonts Folder" conveniently when I want them. Some
people use a "Font Manager" program to move fonts but the font manage usually takes a
"Restart" of the computer to use. My system needs only a relaunching of the
application. (Remember to remove the fonts, following their specific use, for a more
efficient computer.)

In order for the Zip drive to automatically mount on your desktop two things must be
present.
1- There must be a disk in the Zip Drive (it does not mount without a disk)
2- The Iomega Driver must be in the Extensions Folder
The other two ways to get the Zip drive to show on the desktop are these.
1- Startup with a formatted disk in the Zip Drive
2- Use SCSIProbe to Mount the Zip Drive after startup (there must be a disk in the
Zip Drive)
If somehow you have lost your Iomega Extension, I have attached the Iomega Extension
for the Zip Drive. After expanding it, just drop it on top of the System Folder and it
will install in the Extensions Folder where it belongs. This is the latest driver
6.0.1) that I know.

First:
The more "stuff" on the computer, the more one must become aware of the places to do
the correct settings for each of the items. (I like to keep mine computer simple and
functional.) I wouldn't start putting extra desktop accessories and inits and control
panels and neat looking extras on your computer unless they are completely checked out
on how they will affect your current "necessary" operations. Most of these extras are
just that - EXTRA and not NECESSARY.
Second:
Up-to-date is OK but it always takes adjustment to current settings and testing
everything out again to make sure all is working (and that takes some time and since
you express low tolerance for "frustration" - which I call normal troubleshooting - it
seems that OS 8.1 should work well for you for some time). (System 8 is a significant
change to the way a Mac computer works and is worth the upgrade process.) Once the
computer is working, it is new installs that usually cause problems - Conflicts with
extensions and troubleshooting what doesn't work with what.
OS 8.5:
I haven't installed OS 8.5 yet on my computer. I usually wait until other people
experience the "bugs" and problems first and then see if the pluses of the new system
outweigh the necessary "time" that it takes to put the computer back into functional
working order again. So far, I am still waiting on that OS 8.5. See some of the things
that are being said about OS 8.5 and make your decision on it. I don't find enough
"pluses" yet to outweigh the "adjustments" necessary to make the install.
I read alot and learn from these things. I have placed some of the material on my web
site at:
http://my.pclink.com/~dthomas/macintosh.ideas/index.html#interest
56k Modem:
I have a 56k modem but have not even hooked it up. The telephone line is the big
drawback for everyone (My son-in-law does not get anymore speed out of his fast PC with
a 56k modem than his Mac with the 33.6k modem). Many people are not getting anymore
internet speed with a 56k modem than with the 33.6k modem. I don't recommend the added
expense (unless you have "extra" money to waste).
The USWest MegaBit service is getting closer for me instead of the 56k modem. There are
some drawbacks (that is why I cancelled my first installation on this) but there are
some strong pluses on this one and the speed seems to be a significant upgrade. One
does not have to have two telephone lines so the telephone portion of the cost about
cancels out. It remains to be seen though what the added cost will be at the ISP. It
may be too high! STILL WAITING and enjoying the "speed" of the 33.6 modem (no problem)!
Norton 4.0
I have been intending to purchase this for one reason only - the compatibility with the
HFS+ format on the hard drive. Norton 3.5.1 works just fine on everything else but will
"trash" a computer that uses the HFS+ format. The added tool to use is TechTool Pro
(see signature of this message)
Lastly:
I am still playing golf in the wonderful fall weather. I have several new pictures on
my family web site, new additions to my Mac Ideas web site, growing communications from
Sweden, and a church web site is "progressing" (although just like other web sites -
people don't access them and thus do not consider them to be worthy of "time" for
updates and upgrades - it sometimes gets lonesome on these sites). The AGEHR site has
had some extended problems with an ISP server and has been "offline" for weeks now. I
hope that doesn't ever happen to me. The ISP's that I use have been very dependable
(including wavefront - even with the transition to the new company).

Macintosh Ideas - Troubleshooting - Maintenance & Repair
There are a couple of things here (I hope you will read at least some of this).
First: (Service)
I have accessed your email and downloaded the files/pictures (it took about 1/2 hour)
that someone sent you (about 2.5 mb of material - outrageous!) and deleted them from
your server so you shouldn't have problems anymore.
Secondly: (I'm on my soapbox!)
These "uncompressed" attachments (sent completely without warning) are really an
imposition on your email system and either should be discouraged (unless they are
compressed) or just make sure that you WAIT and don't try to "hurry" the downloads when
they come (get a cup of coffee). The downloads might even seem like they are stopped
for awhile but you must wait or they will continue to "plug up" your email system!
Thirdly: (A bigger soapbox and a teaching system!)
2.5 mb of material attached to an email message is totally without reason - unless you
have requested such material from someone - and is misuse of the email system by the
sender. Compression and encription should be applied to any files larger that
(arbitrarily) 100kb-500kb. A small attachment is not problem but anything of this size
(2.5 mb) needs to be "zipped" (.zip - PC) or "stuffed" (.sit - Mac) so it will not be
such an imposition on the receiver!! Also, one should "send a warning with the
indicated size of the attached file" to see if the person actually wants to receive it.
Anything this large belongs on a web page or sent one picture at a time (they sent
three in one file without compression). There are some web site references on this
problem. Send these URL's to the people (maybe read them yourself) that sent the
message to you and hopefully they will learn a little "consideration" for the receiver
in a situation like. ("Just because it CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be
done!")
http://my.pclink.com/~dthomas/macintosh.ideas/fileenclosures/index.html
http://my.pclink.com/~dthomas/macintosh.ideas/mactopcfiles.html
A bit more involved explaination and teaching is at:
http://my.pclink.com/~dthomas/macintosh.ideas/attach.html
Fourthly: (A gently prod!)
Check email regularly so the amount of material (and downloads) on the server does not
get to be enormus like this. A person that uses email should check email a minimum of
once per day (just like regular mail is checked).
Fifthly: (Probably too much but here goes.....!)
(A semi-technical explanation of your situation.)
Each server (the server is your email "post office") has a certain amount of space for
you (a "mailbox") and a window (the modem/telephone line) where you can receive your
mail.
If your mailbox (at the server/post office) becomes stuffed, things fall out (on the
floor) or gets put in secondary mailboxes so you have to ask for them.
When you ask for your mail, it is easy to get things that are in your primary personal
mailbox by just accessing it via your modem (the mailman) for a quick delivery.
-If the amount of mail is small, the mailman (your modem) delivers it on the first
trip since it can be "carried" along with other things.
-If the amount of or size of the email package is too large, the mailman (modem)
must make several trips.
-Sometimes other tasks get in the way on repeated trips (walk back to the truck -
i.e. return to the primary or secondary mailbox, stop to talk to a neighbor
- i.e someone else asks for their email, the boss calls with a request -
i.e. someone accesses a webpage an pre-empts the servers time).
-All these things cause a "slowdown" in delivery of "bulky and large" email
package(s) (just witness Christmas and the "extra help" needed at the
regular post office).
-ONE MUST BE PATIENT AND WAIT for everything to happen in it's own time. Becoming
frustrated does not speed up delivery, only irritation to the receiver and
the person doing the delivery (get a cup of coffee)!
NOTE: Each server has been set up with a set of priorities on how to service
accounts. One account cannot preempt the exclusive use of the server when others
want to access the server. If the server has a limited number of modems and speed,
the clients must "wait their turn" and "their turn will not always be continuous".
It's tough trying to keep everyone happy and still make a little money!
