Two Email Clients

"Getting Started"

"Email is courteous and specific! Deal with it at your own time - follow through on intentions!"
An essential "Getting started with Eudora" and POPmail/Lab. Eudora is the multifeatured email standard but POPmail/Lab is very useful for checking your mail from another computer. For a serious email user: carry a copy of POPmail/Lab on a disk to check email from almost any internet connect (both Mac and PC versions available).
Here are the basics of How to Read, How to Reply, and How to Send email.

Eudora

NOTE: Eudora Lite is a "freeware" version of one of the most popular email clients called Eudora Pro. Freeware means that it costs nothing (it is actually free). It works very well even though a few of the "perks" of the full version are missing (or hidden). It is a fully-functional email client. See Eudora by Qualcomm for a full version of Eudora. Eudora Lite is installed on all the Harding computers and you may copy the program and take it home to your home computer. Eudora can be made to work with more than one user (or more than one email address) but it was not designed for that purpose so it takes some special attention. See How to configure Eudora for multiple users.

When to Use: If you are the only person using your computer, I recommend using Eudora for sending and receiving email. I will configure Eudora to work for you (with your name, email name, etc.)

How to Use:
NOTE: Eudora is so intuitive and "Mac-Like" that little need be said about how to use it. If you are interested, Mail is a site that shows how to configure Eudora and has some thoughts about Claris E-mailer as well. There is also some general description of POP mail.

After Eudora is configured, Quit the program from the File menu or use command q.
(Note: I recommended to leave the In and Out windows open - do not close the IN and OUT windows.)

POPmail

NOTE: POPmail/Lab a "bare bones" email program designed by the University of Minnesota to be used in computer lab situations where there are multiple users of the same computer. It is designed to be able to send and receive email without placing the messages on the local computer. In a sense, one goes to the post office, reads mail at the post office, and leaves the mail there to be picked up at another time. This system is very nice in a school situation because you can use any computer to read and send your email (i.e. computers in the Lab, computers in the library, a computer in a colleage's office, a computer in someone's home that is connected to the internet). POPmail does not have all the "perks" of a complete email client (like Eudora) and items, like an addressbook and automatic signatures, are notably missing. There are ways, with a little learning, that one can "make up" for some of these missing "perks". The University of Minnesota has given us permission to configure this client for use at Harding.
When to Use: If a number of people use one computer or if you wish to send / receive email from another computer, please use POPmail as your email client.
Before starting you will need to know
-Your email address
-Your Password
