You have been "connected" to the internet (world wide web) via your computer and modem.
You need to know the following:
Your new account is located at ________________.
Your email address is _________________
Your password (for now) is: ___________
To change password use _______________________
This account is different than America Online (or any other self-contained online services like CompuServe, ATT, Prodigy, GEnie, NetCruiser, EarthLink, etc). This is a "true" internet connection.
In order to use it you must know a little more and must have some programs (clients) available on your computer.
Main applications
- PPP and FreePPP are used (along with TCP/IP) to connect you with the server at: ________.
The server is your connection to the Internet.
FreePPP is a little telephone icon in the menu bar at the upper right of your screen.
- Netscape (or Internet Explorer) is used to "browse" the World Wide Web
- Eudora is used to send and receive email
Handy email application
- POPmail/lab is a "barebones" email client that has many uses.
POPmail/Lab can be used to access any standard email account from any computer connected to the internet (home account from work, work account from home, personal account from a friend's computer, etc) with limitations.
From a different computer, one usually can receive email but not send email (because of spam restrictions).
A work computer may have a "firewall" that does not allow this operation.
You must know your full name, email account name and your password to use POPmail/Lab.
Mail is left on the server automatically with this client so your messages can all be accessed again from your "primary" computer.
Specialized applications
- Fetch is used to transfer files to an from your Web Site location (when you get one established)
- Telnet is used to connect to other computers (you must have a user name and password on these other computers for this to work - if unsure, use anonymous and your own email address).
- Ircle is used for chat channels
- Newswatcher is used for newsgroups
It will take a little time to learn how to use each of these clients (programs) but they are the standards for use on the Internet.
