"Beginning To Use Your Macintosh Computer"

There is some repeated material here from the Quick Start page, but a little more thorough - the second step. The hyperlinks are all live so you can do some exploring and learning. There are some excellent links to follow to learn about your Macintosh. There are many links to other items in the table of contents.

Launcher:

The Launcher
"What is Launching?"
The Launcher (I usually place this at the bottom of the screen) is used to launch/start/open files, folders, and programs on your Macintosh.

Applications:

Word Processing
Word Processing (one of the most usual applications) is accomplished by using AppleWorks or MicrosoftWorks/Word

NOTE: Any document that you create should be SAVED (File menu / SAVE) before printing (File menu / Print). If the computer freezes or crashes while printing you do not want to lose your work. SAVE often!

Other Applications
Simple Text is a handy basic word processor.
Apple Script Editor is something for advanced Mac users.

Documents:

Documents Folder
Save your Documents (Files). When you save, the documents/files can be automatically be saved in the Documents folder (located at the right side of your screen).
To view the Documents or Files

NOTE: For safety, it is recommended to copy your saved files (documents) to another medium once in a while. (See Backup, Backup, Backup.)

Organizing your Mac:

"The computer cannot make you an organized person but it will reflect your concern for organization. Putting things in an orderly place can make your "electronic" life much less frustrating!!"

Files, Folders, Directories, Launchers and Aliases are computer terms that refer to organization.
Files, Folders, and Directories are similar to the physical ones in a filing cabinet in your office.
The Launcher or an Alias makes "quick" searching and referencing possible in your "electronic" filing cabinet.
The Desktop
This is where organization really begins.
A sign that hung on my office wall for years as a "cop-out" for the look of my real desktop gave an observant viewer something to ponder:
"If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what then is the meaning of a empty desk?"

Commonly heard, "I am too busy, I don't have the time to do this!"
IMHO, The time taken to be organized is not wasted time but a "time saver"!

Aliases
At first a bit complex but, with practice, a tremendous "time saver" again!

Internet:

Netscape (or Internet Explorer)
Netscape is used to browse the World Wide Web (many people call this the "Internet")

NOTE: There is an email client included in Netscape but it must be configured with your name and email address for it to be used.
If you wish to configure Netscape as your email client, some configurations will have to be made. I can do this for you.
NOTE 2: Use the Bookmark file in the Menu bar at the top of the screen to go to some places that are all ready for you!
Please notice some bookmarks that are here for your help. Yahoo!, the opening screen, is not automatically "the best place" to start every search. You will develop your own research system but use some of the "helpful bookmarks" placed in your computer to get you started. EXPLORE!!!

Browsing Hints

Some nice bookmarks have already been placed in your Netscape Bookmarks file.
  • Start Netscape (click on Netscape in the Launcher)
  • In the menu bar at the top of the screen click and hold on Bookmark
  • Drag to a Bookmark and release the mouse button to go to that site.
To add a bookmark of a site that you like
  • Go the the Site
  • In the menu bar at the top of the screen, drag to Add Bookmark
  • Netscape will create a bookmark for the site you are currently viewing.
There are many Search Engines that will search the Web for topics you choose.
  • Yahoo (I many time configure computers to start up with Yahoo!)
  • My Basic Startup Page has many sites and several search engines on the page. (I personally like Web Crawler and use it very much.)
  • Some of my favorite web links can be found here.
  • I have a list of some Handy Items that might interest you.
Look at these sites!
Browse web sites and Save the Bookmarks of sites you like so you can easily return again!

Electronic Mail (email):

"Email is courteous and specific! Deal with it at your own time - follow through on intentions!"

EMAIL Startup
Eudora is used to read and send electronic mail (called "email") (your electronic Mailperson)

POPmail/Lab is also used to read and send electronic mail (your electronic Mailperson)

Information

You Should Know About Your Internet Account
Some Technical Information that is probably not necessary for beginning.
This "home connection" material is duplicated and updated on the
"Internet Service Provider" Page.

Home Use of the Internet

See also: Internet Service Providers

At Home

An internet connection at work is different than the "special systems" like America Online (or CompuServe, ATT, Prodigy, GEnie, NetCruiser, Portal, etc.) since your work connection is probably a "true" internet connection.

In order to use this "internet account", you must know a little more than with the "special systems" above and must have some programs (clients) available on your computer.

To use an internet account at Home, you must have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and must use PPP and FreePPP or MacSlip along with MacTCP or TCP/IP or TCP/IP to connect you with the ISP Server.

The Server is your connection to the Internet. (Your electronic Post Office). Click here for some recommended ISP's for home use.

Click here for info on configuring your Eudora email client or Claris emailer

Review
It will take a little time to learn how to use each of these clients (programs) but they are the standards for use on the Internet. There are other clients like Gopher, Wais, TurboGopher, etc that may become familiar to you in time.
