Map Project

This project is designed for you to demonstrate the interpretive skills you have learned from class presentation, discussion and Turnbull's Maps Are Territories.

  1. Find any map from before 1700, or an indigenous map from before 1900. Choose one that you can profile as interesting or noteworthy cartographically. (Impress me!)
  2. Copy it (as best as possible) and document fully where someone can find it. A copy of the map is due by FEBRUARY 7 for pre-approval.
  3. Identify who drew the map, when, where and for whom (intended audience). Describe other features of the context of the map's production, where appropriate.
  4. Comment, as we have in class, on any of the following (as appropriate):
    • What was the purpose of this map -- and how do we know?
    • How does the map reflect its time, place and function?
    • How does the map reflect a particular perspective and what features of the map allow one to recognize this?
    • How does the map both represent and fail to represent faithfully? (It may be helpful to compare your map to a more recent map.)
    • How did the mapmaker deal with limitations of representation?
    • What features of mapmaking makes this map distinctive or especially worthy of note? --politics? --conventions of representation? --mapmaker's techniques or materials? --cultural elements?
  5. In your commentary, compare features of your map to at least one other in Turnbull's book. (Make connections. Show you read Turnbull and thought about it!)
Your comments should be ~750 words. You will be evaluated on how completely and vividly you interpret the map in the context of this course. Strive to go beyond noticing the obvious. While some other author may help highlight features of the map for you, the analysis must be your own. As always, acknowledge (cite as reference) anyone who has helped you. The written profile is due FEBRUARY 21, 2001 and is worth 13% of your final grade (10% for 3814). Be prepared to share the map in class, to briefly discuss some interesting feature of it (1-2 mins.) and to answer any question about it.
